There are approximately 3000 library visits a month. Using the collection in the building is free. Users come from Antigua, its surrounding villages, and even from as far away as Chimaltenango, Patzun, Comalapa and even Guatemala City.

Most of the users are primary, secondary and university students, studying such diverse themes as bookkeeping, carpentry, automobile mechanics, nursing, tourism and hotel management. Many adults and even pre-primary children come just for the joy of reading.

Teachers bring children on field trips to learn about the library, how it functions, what is a book, how books are catalogued by author and themes. After an explanation, they are invited to sit and read. Many return in their free hours to read for homework assignment, or just for pleasure, often accompanied by their parents or other family members.

In addition to those who just do research for their school assignments in the library itself, actual signed up members of the library take out books on loan. The number of members has steadily increased, no doubt due to the low cost of only Q50 per year for a student or Q100 for an entire family. Members can take out three books for two weeks.

Children can just take books off the shelf and sit at a table and read or look at the pictures. They can do this repeatedly. The Biblioteca staff doesn’t mind replacing them all, saying “It’s worth it, seeing them happily coming and going with their books!”

The library currently has over 15,000 books through direct purchases from our funds and gifts-in-kind. In 2011 the Biblioteca will make internet research services available for students. (Special filters will make sure that the content viewed is totally appropriate for students.) In large part, the success of the Biblioteca is due to the competence and friendliness of the principal Librarian and her staff, for which the members of the Board of Directors and users are sincerely grateful.
