Duane Carter ilustración por Ramón ÁvilaEighteen years ago Duane Carter died in an automobile accident. Because he was one of the first and major cultural promoters in La Antigua, Guatemala, his death left a noted vacuum. His love of reading had led him to build one of the most important private libraries in the city.

To follow through on his spirit, a group of friends created the Fundacion Cultural Duane Carter (FCDC) which has as its principal objective the promotion of education and reading in the region.

The FCDC is a non-governmental organization set up under Guatemalan law and registered in La Antigua, Guatemala. Donations to the FCDC are tax deductible in Guatemala.

In 1996, given the imminent closure of a library that had been inaugurated by the Bank of Guatemala at the Portal de Las Panaderas, on the Central Park in La Antigua, the FCDC took over its administration and financing, adding its own collection to that of the Bank. Today, its users refer to it simply as La Biblioteca.
